Merengue performers were also on stage on evening hours, bringing a free show that many welcomed until late at night. This Carnival was considered to be better organized than previous ones, and was sponsored by Brugal Rum and Lifestyles Resorts, under the umbrella of the DR Ministry of Tourism.     SOSUA BEACH PHOTOS:

Sosua Beach`s ideal location inside a bay allows its waters to remain calm most of the time, and its shallow areas are great for kids and non swimmers. A row of mature trees offer shade, and the dozens of restaurants and beach bars bring the menu straight to the chaise lounges, quite conveniently.

SOSUA BEACH ON VIDEO:

Several diving, snorkeling and tour operators are located at the entrance of the beach by the parking area, where visitors can book all the water sports. Gift shops and art stores offer local art of fine quality, both oil on canvas and sculptures. Sports fishing charters depart from the beach every morning, and return with prized catch such as Marlin, Tuna, Mahi and Wahoo.

Back in the 1903, Sosua bay was a shipping dock for a large-scale fruit plantation operation, later closed in 1916. It was not until 1939 that the land was sold to Jewish settlers that fled from Europe to avoid Hitler`s concentration camps. Inside, the store has a table display with lots of Jewelry made of Larimar, the ( blue pectolite) found only in the DR; shell beads, cow`s horn and other materials that produce high quality necklaces, rings and earrings. A wall has a set of African masks made of wood, and also DR sun masks made of leather.

Another display table has a selection of wooden boxes, Taino figures and Jicara lamps. Next time you walk by Sosua Beach, stop by this store if you need to pick up a quick beach item.

For vokda they offer Ciroc, Grey Goose, Absolut, Smirnoff, and Eristoff. The whisky menu has J&B, Canadian Club, Dewars, Chivas (12 & 18 ), Jack Daniels ( 3 varieties ), Johnny Walker red, black, Dblack, Crown Royal, Jim Beam, and Buchanan.

We asked Cathy to fix a quick drink for us on camera, and she offered a B52, an aperitif based on Kahlua, Baileys and Grand Marnier.

The bar also offers a rum selection that includes Brugal, Barcelo, Columbus and Macorix in all its varieties. Presidente beer, Bohemia, Corona, Stella Artois, Coors light and Heineken are the top choices in the beer list.  Foreign rum includes Barbancourt, Havana Club, and Bacardi.

A few steps up there`s Remy Martin, Hennessy ( VSOP, White, Standard ). And the wine selection has chilean and Italian, per glass. The restaurant side has a menu with soups, pasta, breakfast and crepes, see the listing in the restaurants section.
