Alicia Beach in Sosua is a postcard perfect stretch of golden sand that began to form in 2003 with sand carried by the marine current of the Atlantic Ocean, in a gradual process that took several years and that at first did not attract attention since there was a high cliff where the waters exceeded five meters in depth. Locals talk of the times when Sosua was a Jewish Refuge in the 1940’s and this location was a jumping cliff, also a place where the locals came to relax and feel the ocean breeze.

Sosua’s New Beaches

On April 28, 2017, due to the effect of the strong sea swell, a sandbar appeared that gave rise to a new beach in front of the cliff of the Hotel La Puntilla de Piergiorgio, a phenomenon that caused curiosity, amazement, skepticism and admiration in the citizens.

 

As explained by the Dominican geologist Osiris de León, the emergence of the new beaches in Sosúa is a normal event that occurs when a tectonic fault occurs, since the North American tectonic plate penetrates under the Caribbean tectonic plate and lifts it, which is It combines with the accumulation of sand on the coastline to form a small beach.

 

Before Playa Alicia (as known by locals) was born, the cliff was a vantage point to watch sharks swimming by, drawing many crowds. The beach has shifted in size and width in the past several years, now a far denser sandy bank than it was years ago.

 

Today visitors get a pleasant beach experience with two restaurants ( Steven’s and Waterfront ) serving at the loungers, in a very relaxed atmosphere. The beach has an extension of 275 meters (900 ft) and is flanked by the Balcones building in the West end, and the Waterfront Restaurant in the East. A memorial park honoring the Jewish settlers lines the top of this landmark.

 How To Get There:

Playa Alicia is located in the heart of El Batey, the main district of Sosua. Anyone can walk to it within 5-10 minutes from the Casa Marina resort, Pedro Clisante Street, La Puntilla or any other area located near the center. Take Dr. Rosen street and walk it all the way to the end, where you find the large portal monument at the entrance of Alicia Beach.
